The formula
Converts a raw class rank into a percentile.
( 1 − rank ÷ class size ) × 100
A higher percentile means a better relative position — the top-ranked student in a class of 200 sits at roughly the 99.5th percentile, not the 1st.

Why rank alone doesn't tell the full story
A class rank of "15" means very different things depending on the class size. Rank 15 out of 30 students is roughly the middle of the pack; rank 15 out of 400 students is an elite top-4% position. Percentile fixes this by converting rank into a relative position that's comparable across classes of different sizes.
This is exactly why college applications, scholarship committees, and honors programmes often ask for percentile or "top X%" instead of a raw rank number — it's the only version of the number that means the same thing regardless of how large your graduating class is.
