Formula used & a worked example
The formula
Converts a raw class rank into a percentile.
( 1 − rank ÷ class size ) × 100
A higher percentile means a better relative position — the top-ranked student in a class of 200 sits at roughly the 99.5th percentile, not the 1st.

Why rank alone doesn't tell the full story
A class rank of "15" means very different things depending on the class size. Rank 15 out of 30 students is roughly the middle of the pack; rank 15 out of 400 students is an elite top-4% position. Percentile fixes this by converting rank into a relative position that's comparable across classes of different sizes.
This is exactly why college applications, scholarship committees, and honors programmes often ask for percentile or "top X%" instead of a raw rank number — it's the only version of the number that means the same thing regardless of how large your graduating class is.

Class Rank Calculator vs GPA Calculator
Use the Class Rank Calculator when…
You already know your rank position (e.g. "15th") and class size, and need it converted into a percentile for an application or scholarship form.
Use the GPA Calculator when…
You want to calculate your GPA itself from courses, credits and grades, rather than convert an already-known class rank.
Trusted by students who need answers, not more anxiety
"My school only gives out a raw rank number. This turned '15th out of 200' into something a college application actually asks for."
"Finally understood why my rank sounded worse than it actually was — percentile made way more sense for comparing to other schools."
"Quick, no login needed, and the 'Top X%' framing is exactly how scholarship forms ask for it."
