Under the hood

Formula used & a worked example

The formula

Combines your prior record with a new semester's results.

New CGPA =
( previous CGPA × completed credits
+ new GPA × new credits )
÷ total credits

Total credits is completed + new. This treats the new semester's GPA as if every course in it carried the same grade points — accurate as long as your semester GPA was calculated correctly.

Worked example

Using the default values from the calculator on the right.

1Previous CGPA3.48
2Completed credits72
3New semester GPA / credits3.80 / 15
4Calculation(3.48×72 + 3.80×15) ÷ 87
New CGPA3.54
How it works

Why one great semester moves your CGPA less over time

Your CGPA is a credit-weighted average across every course you've ever completed. Early in your degree, a single strong semester can shift it noticeably. But as your completed-credit total grows, each new semester becomes a smaller slice of the overall average — so the same 3.80 GPA moves your CGPA less in your senior year than it did in your first.

This calculator folds your new semester's GPA into your existing CGPA using exactly that credit weighting, so the result reflects how much (or how little) one more semester actually changes your standing.

How much one semester can move a CGPA
15 credits at 30 completedLarger shift
15 credits at 72 completedModerate shift
15 credits at 110 completedSmaller shift

FAQ

Common questions about the CGPA calculator

Is this result official?
No — it's an estimate based on the values you entered. Confirm official credit and GPA rules with your institution's registrar before making a decision.
Can I save this result?+
Yes — create a free dashboard account and every calculation is saved with its inputs, formula and result, so you can revisit it each semester.
What's the difference between GPA and CGPA?+
GPA covers a single term's courses; CGPA is the running average across every completed semester and is typically what appears on an official transcript.
Why did my CGPA barely move after a great semester?+
The more credits you've already completed, the smaller a share any single new semester is of the total — so its effect on your overall CGPA shrinks the further along you are.
Does this account for repeated or forgiven courses?+
No — this calculator assumes a straightforward credit-weighted average. If your institution has grade forgiveness or repeat policies, confirm the exact treatment with your registrar.
How is this different from the Target GPA Planner?+
This tool tells you your CGPA today after combining a completed semester. The Target GPA Planner instead works forward — it tells you the average you still need to hit a future goal.
