Formula used & a worked example

The formula

The standard weighted-average GPA equation.

GPA =
Σ (grade points × credits)
÷ Σ credits

Weighted mode adds Honors (+0.5) or AP/IB (+1.0) to each course's grade points before averaging. Unweighted mode ignores course type entirely.

Worked example

Using the default courses from the calculator above.

1Data Structures4 cr · A (4.0)
2Linear Algebra3 cr · A- (3.7)
3Macroeconomics3 cr · B+ (3.3)
4Calculation(4×4 + 3.7×3 + 3.3×3) ÷ 10
GPA3.55 / 4.0
How it works

Standard, weighted or unweighted — which is yours?

Most schools compute two different GPAs at once: an unweighted GPA on a plain 4.0 scale, and a weighted GPA that adds bonus points for Honors, AP or IB courses so tougher schedules aren't penalized. Colleges often recalculate both from your transcript, so knowing which one a form is asking for matters.

The Standard tab here uses your school's normal scale with no bonuses. Switch to Weighted if your school counts AP/IB or Honors bonuses, Unweighted to strip them back out, or Semester to combine grades from more than one term into a single average.

Typical grade-point bonuses
Regular course+0.0
Honors course+0.5
AP / IB course+1.0
Weighted scale capup to 5.0

FAQ

Common questions about the GPA calculator

Is this result official?
No — it's an estimate based on the values and scale you entered. Confirm official rules and grade-point mappings with your institution's registrar before making a decision.
Can I save this result?+
Yes — create a free dashboard account and every calculation is saved with its inputs, formula and result, so you can revisit it or track it across the semester.
What's the difference between Weighted and Unweighted?+
Unweighted treats every course equally on a 4.0 scale. Weighted adds bonus points for Honors (+0.5) and AP/IB (+1.0) courses, which is why a weighted GPA can go above 4.0.
What does the Semester tab do?+
It combines grades across more than one term into a single average — useful mid-way through a multi-semester course sequence, or when comparing two terms at once.
Does this work for 4.3 or 5.0 scales?+
Yes — the grade-point mapping behind each letter grade adjusts automatically based on the scale your institution uses; the underlying formula stays the same.
How is this different from the CGPA Calculator?+
This tool calculates GPA from a fresh list of courses. The CGPA Calculator instead combines a CGPA you already have with a new semester's results.
