How it works

How much is your final exam actually worth?

Your final exam weight is the percentage of your total course grade that a single exam controls. Most college courses set the final between 20% and 50%. A 20% final has limited power to move your grade; a 50% final can rescue a weak semester or sink a strong one. Before you start revising, open your syllabus and find the exact weight — every calculation on this page depends on that one number.

Once you know the weight, this final grade calculator solves the equation in reverse: given the grade you have now and the grade you want at the end, it returns the minimum score you need on the final. That's the number that turns "I need to do well" into a study plan.

Common questions about the final grade calculator

Is this result official?–
No — it's an estimate based on the values and scale you entered. Every institution weights finals slightly differently (some drop the lowest quiz, some cap the final's influence). Always confirm the exact rule with your syllabus or professor before making a decision.
What if my final is worth more than one exam?+
Combine the weights of every remaining assessment into a single "final weight" figure, and use your grade going into that combined block as the current grade. If the assessments have very different weights, calculate them one at a time from the last one backward.
Can I save the result?+

Does it work with letter grades or ECTS?+
Yes — switch the scale tab above the form to Letter grade, GPA 4.0, or ECTS, and the same formula runs on that scale instead of percentage.
My required score is over 100% — what does that mean?+
It means your target grade isn't mathematically reachable through the final exam alone at its current weight — even a perfect score wouldn't get you there. Talk to your professor about extra credit, or adjust your target.
Why is 94.9% flagged "at risk" if it's technically possible?+
Any required score in roughly the top 15% of possible marks is flagged so you don't underestimate the prep needed — technically possible isn't the same as comfortably likely.
Can I still pass if I fail my final?+
Set your desired final grade to your course's passing threshold (often 50–60%) instead of your usual target, and the calculator will show the minimum final score that still clears passing, even with a weak exam.
How do I calculate a final grade with multiple weighted categories?+
First combine your existing categories (homework, quizzes, midterms) into a single current-grade percentage using their own weights, then use that combined number as the "current grade" input here alongside the final's weight.
