Under the hood

Formula used & a worked example

The formula

Rearranged from the cumulative-GPA equation.

Required GPA =
( target CGPA × total credits
− current CGPA × completed credits )
÷ remaining credits

Total credits is completed + remaining. If the result exceeds 4.00, the target isn't mathematically reachable in the remaining credits alone.

Worked example

Using the default values from the calculator on the right.

1Current CGPA3.35
2Target CGPA3.70
3Completed / remaining80 / 40 credits
4Calculation(3.70×120 − 3.35×80) ÷ 40
Required GPA3.82
How it works

Why this is different from a single-semester GPA

Your CGPA is a running average across every credit you've completed so far. Because it's an average, a few strong or weak semesters move it less than you'd expect the closer you get to graduation — the more credits you've already completed, the harder a single semester can shift the total.

This planner works backward from your goal: given where you are now and how many credits remain, it tells you the exact average you need across those remaining credits to land on your target CGPA — turning a vague goal into a number you can actually plan a semester around.

Why fewer remaining credits raise the bar
80 remaining creditsEasier to shift
40 remaining creditsModerate
15 remaining creditsHard to shift
< 15 remaining creditsMay be unreachable

FAQ

Common questions about the target GPA planner

Is this result official?
No — it's an estimate based on the values you entered. Confirm official credit and GPA rules with your institution's registrar before making a decision.
Can I save this result?+
Yes — create a free dashboard account and every calculation is saved with its inputs, formula and result, so you can revisit it as your credits update through the semester.
What if the required GPA is over 4.00?+
It means the target isn't mathematically reachable in the remaining credits alone, even with straight A's. Try lowering the target, or extending the remaining credits over more semesters.
What if my current CGPA already meets my target?+
The required GPA will come out at or below your target — meaning you can maintain roughly your current average (or even dip slightly) and still land on target.
Does this account for weighted or bonus grade points?+
No — this planner works on a plain CGPA scale. If your school weights Honors or AP courses, calculate your semester GPA with the Weighted GPA Calculator first, then use that number here.
How is this different from the CGPA Calculator?+
The CGPA Calculator tells you your current cumulative average today. This planner works forward — it tells you the average you still need to hit a future target.
